GeekoCFD 6.3.0 is here!

I am pleased to announce the release of GeekoCFD 6.3.0, which includes the latest updates for openSUSE 13.1 from the official repository, and a few additional packages such as eigen, gromacs and meshlab. Additionally, VirtualBox add-ons are now installed by default, as well as openmpi-devel.

This release obsoletes all the previous releases of GeekoCFD, whose users are invited to update to GeekoCFD 6.3.0. GeekoCFD 6.2.0 was an internal release, and was never released.

It is also time to look at numbers. Since I released it, GeekoCFD 64-bit has clearly been the most downloaded version of GeekoCFD.

GeekoCFD (64-bit)

  • 5444 downloads
  • 193 clones

GeekoCFD text mode

  • 120 downloads
  • 10 clones

The 32-bit version of GeekoCFD, had 391 downloads, 23 clones, and 4 comments. Based on this I decided some time ago to stop releasing a 32-bit version of GeekoCFD. At that time, I did not drop GeekoCFD text-mode because I thought it was too early. However, numbers clearly indicate that users of GeekoCFD largely favour the full-featured 64-bit version. As a consequence, from this release on, GeekoCFD will only be 64-bit, and only available as full-featured distribution. This will reduce the time it takes to maintain the images, and will leave more time to improve the main release.

I anticipate the next release will be based on the new openSUSE 13.2, and will bring the latest versions of the major computational packages included in GeekoCFD.

Enjoy! 🙂
